A common technique of affiliate marketing used by many marketers, including some of the super-affiiliates, is to add a bonus offer to an existing affiliate offer. I have seen this done recently usually during new launches of a product. Knowing that you will get extra bonuses or added coaching can increase the likelihood of ‘an irresistible offer’.

So how it works is you make your bonus offer to your viewers (via blog, email list, etc) telling them about the product and your bonus offer. You also tell them that after they buy they product they send you an email (or use your contact page) with the transaction Id of their purchase. Then you send them the product once you’ve verified the purchase. In my case I have digital products but you might offer physical products or even services like coaching via phone or email. The sky’s the limit – use your creativity!

For a real example, check out my Learn and Master Guitar Bonus Offer (with video).

Make sure you check the fine print of the affiliate product you are selling, as some merchants don’t allow you to do this. For more tips on affiliate marketing check out Opportunity.com

At its simplest level, an affiliate business just involves getting people to click on your affiliate links so that you can collect commissions. You don’t even need a website for this but ideally you should. An affiliate link looks something like this: http://www.mywebsite.com?affId=myID, where mywebsite.com is the website of the product you’re selling (eg. amazon.com) and myID is the special affiliate id you receive when you sign up to be an affiliate. This is how the company knows you sent them the traffic so that they can pay you. Opportunity.com explains this entire system in much more detail through its video training program.

My suggestion is that you start with one product. Sign up for their affiliate program. If you’re not too tech savvy, try setting up a webpage on Squidoo which doesn’t require any programming. Put some useful content on this page – for example, find some relevant youtube videos, or make your own videos if you can. Find some articles from Ezine Articles. Write your own content if you’re knowledgeable in that field. Make sure to sprinkle your affiliate link in amongst the content. To keep the page fresh, you could pull in some blog posts from other websites automatically via RSS feeds.

Once you have the page set up (squidoo or your own website) you should try and send traffic to that page. You can do this via twitter, facebook, myspace, etc but make sure you are sending them to informative content not just an ad or sales page. It’s a more subtle but effective approach these days.

Over time you want to have your own website and blog regularly to get traffic from the search engines and have your own presence. Then the squidoo pages send traffic to your own website instead of being the central focus. But if you don’t have tech skills it will take a while for you to learn the basics, but it is well worth the effort.

Remember, the 2 key things you need are traffic (eyeballs to your pages) and an offer than converts (sells). Often times we don’t have either and usually traffic is the biggest problem since there are tons of great products out there.

The Unsexy Business?

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Everyone dreams of making a big score selling something online and living the dream of working at home in any country you like. Similar to shows like American Idol, people dream of getting ‘discovered’ and making it big. This is totally understandable!

However we need to think more practically. If you consider another post I did on how I make money with Google Adsense on Youtube, what if you had one hundred little businesses making you $81.22 per month? Or you increased the number of videos (from 50 to say 1000 videos). Now granted, this would take a ton of work, and could be incredibly boring at times but you get the idea.

The other benefit to doing this is it breaks the larger task of making $8000/month (or whatever your goal is) into smaller manageable pieces. Remember “The journey of 1000 miles must begin with a single step.” Instead of being overwhelmed thinking you need to sell a ton of one product, what if you set your goal to make one business/product make you $80/month for example. Do everything you can focused on that single goal. Then replicate the process over and over again.

The most difficult part of this will be to continue to take action during the replication process because this is not as ‘sexy’ as having one business become hugely successful. You might even consider outsourcing some of this work using sites such as Elance.

Let me know when you get your first business/product up to speed, and you’re ready for replication!

Affiliate Networks

Posted by: | Comments (0)

When searching for a product to sell as an affiliate, you have basically two options. You can contact a website directly for a product you like (look for an ‘Affiliates’ link on their website) or have just found in your niche. The other option is to join an affiliate network (or multiple networks). This is a website that has thousands of products in all sorts of categories all in one place. You might have to join multiple networks to find the right products for your niche. Selling affiliate products is known Affiliate Marketing.

Here are some affiliate networks for you to check out:
Clickbank
Paydotcom
LinkShare
Commission Junction

The Power of Product Reviews

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Some smart affiliate marketers figured out that many people who buy products look for reviews of the product before they buy. So they often set up product review sites where customers can compare products and where each product has an affiliate link somewhere on the website.

The sad truth is that many review sites are not legitimate, but just an attempt to sell the product. And suprisingly many of the reviewers have never even seen the product (because they would often have to buy the product or don’t have the expertise to judge the product).

I prefer a more honest approach. I have a large following of guitarists who trust me as a guitar teacher. That is why I recently requested a copy of the Learn and Master Guitar DVD Course from the owners so that I could evaluate it. I received the product by mail and watched the DVDs, and checked out the accompanying book. Once I felt comfortable that the material was of high quality and useful, I decided it was ethical to promote it to my students.

Here’s an example affiliate video I did discussing the Learn and Master Guitar DVD Course. I did a bit of guitar playing to hopefully inspire and show I can play, then discussed the course in detail. I also provided an affiliate link in the description of the video. I’m happy to report I made my first sale the first day after uploading the video (in the wee hours while I was sleeping which is even sweeter!).

When most experts talk about how to make a living by selling things to others, it is usually implied that you are selling your own products or services. For example, musicians are taught to sell their cds, and possibly selling merchandise such as T-shirts and mugs. Many entrepreneurs struggle to create and sell their own products.

Often times the lack of ability to make sales comes down to the facts that either there is no market for your product, or you don’t have enough traffic coming to your website. When you have a product-focused mindset (as most of us do) you focus too much on creating the product (the cd, the information product, etc) and not enough time on the marketing side of things. In other words, most of us aren’t great marketers or salesmen. So doesn’t it make sense to hone our sales and marketing skills before we spend too much time on product creation?

By becoming an affiliate and selling someone else’s product, the emphasis automatically becomes on finding a market and getting traffic to your website. The other genius of doing affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to worry about taking payments and delivering the product. This is all done by the vendor. And not to mention the ability to work at home.

So how do you find a market? Well, for starters you need to find products that are already selling. With some of the affliate networks like Clickbank, they organize products into categories such as Health and Wellness, Business, Entertainment, etc. You can drill down within a category you’re interested in (and ideally have some knowledge of) and find a product that is selling. In the case of Clickbank they have a variable called ‘Gravity’ which tells you the relative success of the product in the market.

Once you have your product you need to promote it on your websites, blogs and social networks. The key here is to determine the keywords that people are searching for in your niche of choice. This is how most people will find you, via searching by keyword phrases. You need to put these keywords in your titles, descriptions, tags, and content. Keep in mind there is a lot of competition these days so you’ll want to find keywords that aren’t super-competitive. When you search for the phrase in Google, try to find phrases that have well under 100,000 competing webpages (shown at top right of search results), but still enough searches to be useful. Combine this with using the Google Keyword tool, to make sure there are enough searches.

I like to think about affiliate marketing this way: “People are already buying billions of dollars worth of products online every year. So therefore I will try and get in between every transaction by referring people to those products, that I truly believe in and recommend to my readers.”
