The Taboo Topic: What Social Class Are You Now?
By adminOprah Winfrey had a show today on social class. People are feeling like they’re moving to a lower class as they lose their jobs and life savings – http://www.oprah.com/dated/oprahshow/oprahshow-20090507-social-class
Many of the guests got laid off and never expected to be unemployed. Many of them never saved any money. But the biggest fallacy that many had was the expectation that many recent grads have – they’ve been promised that if they study hard, get a degree and work hard, they will live the American dream. The reality is there is no job security and there probably never was.
As challenging as getting a degree and finding work is, it’s trained us to work for others, and lose that natural entrepreneurial spirit I believe we all have. I always think back to blacksmiths, general store owners, people selling food, and trading services amongst each other before the industrial age kicked in.
Take this opportunity to find your true passion and start your own business – becoming an entrepreneur. Sell your expertise online through information products, start consulting out of your home or develop some other home-based business. You might have to support this with a part time job, but resolve to never be in this situation of dependency again! Who knows, with hard work you could be one of the next entrepreneur success stories.
There’s never a better time to start your own independent consulting business now! http://thewealthyworker.com/
Very poignant post, sir. There is certainly a sense of “negative progress” these days. For many hard working Americans, it can seem like the working class is bailing out the wealthy who mismanage their businesses and the poor, too lazy to apply themselves. Keeping a positive attitude is paramount to being successful.
I like what you have to say about the trades of eras past. Whereas people today fall into the rank and file of societal norms which program them to go to college and then find a job, history and careful studying of successful entrepreneurs reveals that it is more important to develop a skillset to be applied relevantly. Rather than seek to take a college education and apply book smarts to working for someone else, it stands to reason that figuring out what you enjoy doing and then investing in yourself in order to be the best at what you do can really pay off.
Always enjoy reading your posts, sir. Cheers.
